Rosca de Reyes: A Mexican gastronomic tradition

Did you know that Mexico is the country with the most variety of sweet bread in the world?

Bakers and artisans of Mexican cuisine are known for always reinventing themselves with creations full of flavor and color. This is the result of the importance of food in Mexican celebrations, because it is the element that can not be missed.

Just as the Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is attributed the Pan de Muerto or Pibipollo, or the turkey at Christmas; the Epiphany at Mexico (or Kings Day) is represented by the Rosca de Reyes: an oval bread figure, decorated with sugary fruits, known also as Kings' Ring.

A tradition that is maintained in Mexico because is an occasion for family or friends to have a reason to meet and live together, and it really is a very delicious reason!

But what makes this Mexican dishes unique from the others is that inside the bread figures in the shape of a baby are hidden, at least four of them. These figures represent the baby Jesus and how he was hidden from King Herod.

You may wonder, what about the figures when it comes to eating the Rosca de Reyes? There is a dynamic, at least in Mexico: each person at the party takes turns to cut the part of the Rosca of their choice and if a baby Jesus figure inside his slice will have to offer tamales on La Candelaria Day (February 2nd), this day being another religious celebration.

The Rosca de Reyes is really a delight that nobody should miss if you have the opportunity to try it, apart from being part of a celebration full of fun.
