Happy 48th Birthday, Cancún!

By: Ana María Alcocer

Located on the northeast coast of Quintana Roo, with all the beauty around its beaches, its extension and the biodiversity of its reefs, islands, lagoons, cenotes, as well as the great variety of flora and fauna, has turned Cancun into the most recognized Mexican tourist destination on a world scale. But, what are the origins of this place?

At that time, the northeast fringe of what we know as the Yucatan Peninsula was full of virgin beaches. The Mexican government, with the support of FONATUR, a tourist promotion trust in Mexico, had planned the creation of a tourist city within that strip of sand that showed the Sea on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other.

The development of what we know today as Cancun began in 1969 with 6000 inhabitants, and in 1974 it started operations with an international airport and a hotel. Cancun at that time, was the first of the five tourist poles of the Mexican coasts being the basis of a new policy fostered in tourism.

Who would say that today is one of the most recommended tourist destinations in Mexico and in the world?

What does the word "Cancun" mean?

The name of Cancun comes from the Mayan words "kaan" and "kun" which mean "nest of snakes", due to the large number of specimens that inhabit the region, due to the jungle area in which this city has been developed.
